Your Mercy Health doctor will evaluate your case to determine if you are a candidate for robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery. Although there are many advantages of using this system for treating cervical cancer, not all patients are candidates. If you are not a candidate for other minimally invasive treatments, you will likely not be a candidate for robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery.

What are risks of da Vinci robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery for cervical cancer?

What to expect during da Vinci robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery for cervical cancer?

During robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery, your surgeon will:

  • Make five small incisions in your abdomen
  • Insert surgical instruments through the incisions in the abdomen 
  • Move the instruments into the uterus controlled by robotic arms operated by the surgeon
  • Once into position, your surgeon will remove the affected organs
  • When the organs are out, the surgeon will stitch the incisions to close them

Recovery from da Vinci robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery for cervical cancer

Most patients require a overnight hospital stay after a robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery. Recovery time will vary based on your overall health and how complex the surgery was. Most patients are able to return to their normal activity within two to six weeks after the procedure.

Once you are ready to be discharged, your doctor will provide a detailed list of instructions for your recover including:

  • Avoid lifting heavy objects and engaging in sexual activity for six to nine weeks 
  • Gradually return to your normal activity level
  • Follow-up schedule
  • You can return to work when your doctor gives you clearance, typically three to four weeks after surgery
