Overview

Many people with urinary incontinence think it’s a natural part of aging and that they simple have to live with. Or they assume the only option is surgery, so they’re reluctant to bring it up with their doctor.

Urinary incontinence and other pelvic floor conditions are a very common problem as women — and men — age. It can include urine leakage with you laugh or pain during intercourse. The good news is that it can be treated.

At Mercy Health, our pelvic floor specialists work with you to determine what type of treatment will work best for you. That treatment almost always begins with pelvic floor physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Physical therapy is an effective cure for urinary incontinence because the primary cause of the condition is weakness of the pelvic floor muscles. This weakness can happen from pregnancy and childbirth, chronic straining or heavy lifting.

Our pelvic floor physical therapists help you identify which pelvic floor muscles that need to be strengthened. They then give you specific exercises to work on, including Kegel exercises, and the feedback you need to know if you are doing them correctly. Together, the exercises and feedback will help decrease the number of stress incontinent episodes.
