Medical Residents Care for the Bond Hill Community

Mercy Health - Cincinnati, which provides advanced, compassionate, quality care in your neighborhood through its care network, announces that medical residents from The Jewish Hospital are helping care for members of the Bond Hill community through a recently developed collaboration at the WinMed Health Center.

WinMed Health Services and the Community Action Agency partnered to provide accessible healthcare to low-income families in the popular community center, which provides a host of youth and community services. WinMed opened a center at CAA and it is a federally qualified health center that accepts most insurance plans and determines fees based on income and family size.

While pediatricians have been available regularly to see and treat children, the center struggled to find providers to see adults. At the same time, leaders of The Jewish Hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program were seeking more opportunities for residents to experience providing primary care services in a medical practice setting.

“Based on our mutual needs, an idea was born and today, a resident and faculty member from The Jewish Hospital’s residency program staff the center five days each week,” said Pat Davis-Hagens, Mercy Health Central Market President and CEO of The Jewish Hospital. “The residents help expand access to care in an area where it’s much needed and at the same time, they gain valuable experience in caring for men and women in a real-world setting, helping them to become better doctors.”

A medication management clinic is also part of residents’ clinic at WinMed. Following a referral from their provider at the center, patients come in and talk with the pharmacist, who helps them understand their medications, confirms they are on best therapy and ensures that they know how to take their medication so that they are successful in treating their conditions.

The residents’ clinic launched in January. Residents see five to six patients daily and pharmacy staff meet with 16-20 patients weekly.
