Mercy Health — Cincinnati has achieved full accreditation for both the Orthopedic and the Sports Physical Therapy Specialty residencies from the American Board of Physical Therapy Fellowship and Residency Education.
Mercy Health is the only health care provider in Cincinnati and just one of five health care systems in Ohio to hold both these accreditations. Accredited orthopedic and sports physical therapy residency programs like Mercy Health’s provide licensed Physical Therapists with advanced clinical and academic training under the mentorship of experienced clinical experts.
“Our orthopedic and sports physical therapists are leaders in their field and the accrediting body for our profession agrees. It grants accreditation to those organizations that can ensure the quality of the education that participants receive,” said Mike McCormack, MHS, PT, SCS, ATC, Regional Director of Rehabilitation Services for Mercy Health. “I congratulate our rehabilitation services team members for their dedication and all the hard work they put in over the past two years to earn this achievement. They will play a vital role in creating more talented physical therapists who give their patients the best quality care.”
Residents will work alongside orthopedic and sports physical therapy-certified specialists at Mercy Health — Orthopedic and Sports Medicine practices across the region. They will develop advanced competencies in this field, as they learn to prevent, treat and rehabilitate injuries in patients over the course of the year-long orthopedic and sports physical therapy residency programs.
The orthopedic physical therapy residency emphasizes evaluation and movement of the entire musculoskeletal system. The sports physical therapy residency program works closely with schools and club sports teams and emphasizes the skills a therapist needs to determine when a patient or athlete is again able to return to play or an active lifestyle.
The American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) is the accreditation body for the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) for post-professional residency and fellowship programs in physical therapy. The accreditation process ensures that residents have received an experience consistent with the standards of practice.
