For 25 years, the Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital Cancer Center has provided exceptional cancer care to the community. Since its ribbon cutting in January 2000, the Cancer Center has remained steadfast in its commitment to offer comprehensive, compassionate, and cutting-edge oncology treatments to Mahoning Valley cancer patients.
The Cancer Center is led by Dr. Patrizia Guerrieri, who has more than 30 years of experience in oncology, specializes in treating a variety of cancer diagnoses, with a particular focus on female cancer types and advanced treatment techniques. Also providing high quality, compassionate care to our patients is a highly experienced team comprised of a dosimetrist, secretary, care navigator, dietitian, and social worker, as well as radiation therapists and nurses.
"It has been an honor for our Cancer Center to serve this community for the past 25 years," said Dr. Patrizia Guerrieri, radiation oncologist and St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital Cancer Center director. "We know proximity to care can improve patient outcomes, and we remain committed to delivering world-class, state-of-the-art cancer care close to home, just as we set out to do a quarter of a century ago.”
In 2024 alone, the Cancer Center treated approximately 300 new patients and administered more than 5,000 radiation therapy treatments, reinforcing its role as a pillar of cancer care in the region.
“Cancer is a difficult journey, but having access to high-quality care without leaving your support network is invaluable,” said Genie Aubel, president, Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital. “As we celebrate 25 years of service, we reaffirm our commitment to expanding access to innovative treatments and ensuring that every patient receives the high quality, compassionate care they deserve.”
Looking to the future, the St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital Cancer Center continues to evolve and enhance its services to meet the needs of the community and remains focused on growing access to care through investments in new technology and innovations.
Angela Ritz, St. Elizabeth Boardman Cancer Center secretary, and Jeanette Rotz, dosimetrist for the Center, have been members of the Cancer Center team since the year it opened. Together, they reflected on the last 25 years and this meaningful milestone, “It’s been a privilege to be a part of the Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Boardman Cancer Center for more than two decades. To experience the transformation of what started as a small, one-story radiation oncology building 25 years ago to an entire medical campus today is truly remarkable,” said Ritz.
Rotz added, “It is an honor to serve our community with the best health care in the area. We look forward to the next 25 years and beyond as we continue to fulfill our ministry’s mission and care for our patients.”
The Cancer Center was the first building on the St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital campus, which officially opened its doors in 2007.
