Program Overview
The PGY 1 residency program at Mercy Health Lorain Hospital is a 12-month program designed to expose two highly motivated residents to numerous practice areas, focusing in acute care services. Several direct patient care learning experiences are offered (i.e. internal medicine, critical care, ambulatory care, etc.) as well as opportunities to gain knowledge in alternative practice areas (i.e. administration, patient safety/quality, etc.). Elective learning experiences can be tailored to match the resident's interest.
Consistent with other residency programs, the design and conduct of a major project and a pharmacy service component are required. Additional activities include presentations, precepting of APPE and IPPE students and participation on numerous hospital committees. Residents may also participate in a longitudinal teaching certificate program (offered by the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy) that provides them with an opportunity to improve their didactic, small group and experiential teaching skills.
Mercy Health Lorain Hospital is a community hospital licensed for 338 beds. The Department of Pharmacy operates 24 hours a day with nearly 25 professional and 25 supporting staff members. Our pharmacists serve as preceptors for several pharmacy schools in Ohio. The Postgraduate Year One (PGY 1) Pharmacy Residency Program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program was established in 2015 and has been accredited by ASHP since 2016.
