How to Apply — General Surgery Residency at The Jewish Hospital

Thank you for your interest in the general surgical residency program at The Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health. 

Application Deadline 

The deadline for applications is Dec. 1 of each year. Candidates being considered will be invited for an interview between November and December of the year prior to residency start. Invitations are sent to qualified applicants after receiving completed applications.

ERAS

All applications are processed electronically through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) we do not accept paper applications or applications submitted by email. The deadline for applications is Dec. 1 of each year.

Applicant Requirements

The following is a list of requirements for all applicants:

  • Dean’s letter
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Transcripts
  • USMLE requirements: Candidates must pass Step 1 and score 230 or higher on Step 2
  • U.S. clinical experience (= to 75 percent)
  • International medical graduates must be ECFMG certified
  • Graduation from medical school needs to have been within the last two years of the date of app
  • All candidates are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP); we do not offer “pre-match” positions. ECFMG certification (including USMLE 1, 2-CK and 2-CS examinations, English proficiency, etc.) is necessary to participate in the NRMP; graduates of medical schools outside of the United States should check with the NRMP to be sure they meet the requirements for participation. USMLE 3 is not necessary for ECFMG certification or to participate in the NRMP.
  • Final decisions regarding the suitability of candidates, as well as the ranking in the NRMP, are made by a committee composed of those attending physicians and current residents who have participated in the interview process.

Applicants are selected based on their preparedness, ability, academic credentials, communication skills, motivation and integrity.
