What to Expect

Residents work alongside hospital staff chaplains to provide 24/7 coverage of the hospital. Typically, at least two chaplains work during daytime and evening shifts. One chaplain holds the trauma phone and is responsible for responding to consults from the Emergency Department. One chaplain holds the primary phone and is responsible for responding to and triaging consults from other patient care areas. Chaplains also round on hospital clinical units to provide routine patient care, offer staff support and participate as members of the multidisciplinary team.

The patient population at Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center is socio-economically and racially diverse. Chaplains embody the hospital’s mission to serve all patients with compassion – particularly the poor, dying and underserved.

Call Schedule

Residents participate in the department’s on-call rotation. On-call happens from home, and residents are called to the hospital only if the overnight staff chaplain needs additional support.

Average Hours a Week

The chaplain resident position is a full-time, 40-hour per week position. Chaplain residents should expect to work five, eight-hour shifts, which includes eight hours of supervised education per week.

Chaplain residents:

  • Provide clinical coverage on both weekdays and on weekends
  • Receive two days off per week
  • Provide back-up on-call coverage (from home)
  • Participate in holiday coverage schedule

Weekly shifts are assigned by the department manager and include a combination of daytime and afternoon/evening shifts. Availability to do clinical work on both Saturdays and Sundays is required for program participation. Occasional overnight shifts may be required according to department need.
