Program Overview
The Transitional Year Residency Program, established in 2004 and with four positions per year, is a community-based, medical center program with academic affiliations. The program has ACGME Continued Accreditation with no citations. St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is an ACS verified Level I Trauma Center and tertiary referral center. We are affiliated with the College of Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) and Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUHCOM).
Our program provides the resident with broad-based medical training with core medicine and surgery rotations. The overall goal of the program is to produce graduates who are trained with strong fundamentals of clinical medicine in order to advance their residency training. This year allows the resident to tailor specific future needs with four months of electives. Our program, with its urban location, provides a well-rounded and diverse training environment where our graduates are fundamentally sound in clinical medicine and are prepared to embark on their specific residencies. Some of these include radiology, dermatology, anesthesia and physical medicine and rehab.
Residents will have flexibility in their schedule during the transitional year, focusing on the electives for future educational plans. They will also have exposure to a diversity of patients through the inpatient, outpatient and emergency room settings. Transitional residents will have the opportunity to work closely with the residents from internal medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine, orthopedics and family practice, as well as our core faculty and subspecialists, during the transitional year.
