Program Overview
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is a 12-month program with an emphasis in acute care and experiences in ambulatory care, practice management, drug policy and formulary management, hospital practice and academic development. In addition to the required residency rotations, the resident can tailor the program to his or her personal interests through a variety of elective opportunities. Consistent with other residency programs, the design and conduct of a major project and a pharmacy service component are required.
The strengths of our program include internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine and the numerous opportunities available to participate in the education of pharmacy students, resident physicians and other health care professionals. Residents also participate in a longitudinal teaching certificate program (offered by the Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Pharmacy) that provides an opportunity to improve their didactic, small group and experiential teaching skills.
The residency program was established in 2004 and has been accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) since 2005.
Our Purpose
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
