Program Overview
The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center provides a comprehensive education for residents in all aspects of emergency care. Our program emphasizes a physiological approach to medical illness with an interdisciplinary team care model, in which the resident is a key element.
We promote education across a broad spectrum of acute and chronic disease processes through encounters in the Emergency Department and high-yield off-service rotations, such as anesthesia, orthopedics, pediatric ICU, EMS and toxicology. We will train residents to utilize well-honed bedside examination skills and appropriate diagnostic modalities to optimize patient management and outcomes. All medical, radiologic and surgical subspecialties are available 24/7 to assist in patient care and emergency consultations.
It is our goal to provide opportunities for residents to excel in their chosen field, whether it be subspecialty training, clinical practice or academic medicine. We will work hard to ensure physicians have ample time to pursue personal and professional interests, as well as the development of leadership skills through participation in research, medical education and hospital committees. The broad range of scholarly activities available includes peer-reviewed clinical research, case reports, quality improvement projects, medical education and presentations at regional and national conferences.
As the largest health care provider and largest employer in our region, Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center cares for nearly 200,000 patients each year. Our high case acuity translates to a 25 percent admission rate for the 57,250 patients seen annually in the Emergency Department.
